ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECT OF BAUXITE TAILINGS ON BASIC SOIL STABILIZATION ON MINE ROADS

Abstract

The condition of the subgrade on mining roads is greatly influenced by weather conditions such as rain. When it rains, the base soil layer becomes saturated. Saturated soil conditions will result in a decrease in the carrying capacity of the subgrade. A decrease in the bearing capacity of the soil can potentially cause work accidents. This research is related to improving the value of soil bearing capacity by stabilizing the subgrade using other materials. The material chosen for soil stabilization is material resulting from bauxite washing waste, namely bauxite tailings. Bauxite tailings are waste resulting from washing bauxite which still contains heavy metals, where handling this bauxite tailings waste is a problem experienced by many bauxite mining companies in West Kalimantan. This research aims to determine the type and characteristics of the subgrade of the mine road and to determine the effect of bauxite tailings on subgrade stabilization on the mine road in terms of the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) value. The results of the AASHTO soil classification system test show that the subgrade soil type of PT Cita Mineral Investindo Tbk Site Sandai mining road is included in group A-2-6 (0), namely gravel and sand soil types containing silt and clay. The results of the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test calculation show that, as the mixture of bauxite tailings increases in the subgrade of the mine road, the CBR value decreases. Therefore, it is recommended to add other materials as soil stabilization materials.
